Charles Cecil “Chief” Scamihorn, 91, of Bloomington, IN passed away at his residence on February 12, 2011.  He was born on April 14, 1919 to George C. and Martha M. (Brocklehurst) Scamihorn in Vigo, County.

In Bloomington he retired as a Chief Boatswain Mate for the U.S. Navy, at 21 years of service.  He was called Chief by his Bloomington friends out of respect for his Navy experience.  Chief loved the Navy, always interested in what is happening to the Navy and its men.  He loved being at Sea.  He was especially proud to be Iron Man of the pacific fleet, was proud of his 12 campaign metals from WW II and Korean War. He witnessed testing of hydrogen bomb in the Bikini Islands.  He was an avid hunter and fisherman.  Loved being out in the woods or fields.  He fed squirrels and birds when he could no longer go out hunting.  He loved sunrises.  His bird dogs were named either Pepsi or Coke and he trained them.  He also enjoyed reading about the Navy, hunting, bird dogs and game recipes that he often cooked.  He loved making fudge and Blackberry cobbler.

Chief was a member of Bloomington Free Methodist Church, fleet reserve, and the American Legion.  The most important thing to him were loving and serving Jesus.  He said he was married to the most beautiful and most perfect woman he knew.  He wants the people in the Bloomington Free Methodist church to know he loved them.

Chief is survived by his wife Olive (Puckett) Scamihorn, Daughter, Lanore Scamihorn of Ellettsville, IN, Cheryl Scamihorn of Macon, GA, Brother George Scamihorn of West VA., and Sisters Mary Wall of Terre Haute, and Bonnie Johnson of Hobart, IN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Brother Oscar Samihorn and a infant Sister, Wilma.

Services will be at 1 pm Wednesday February 16, 2011 at the Free Methodist Church in Bloomington, IN., followed by a graveside service at the Stephen Memorial Cemetery on Eagle Street in Lewis, IN at 3:30pm. Visitation will be Tuesday from 5-8pm at the Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old State Road 37, Bloomington, IN.

Scamihorn, which is how I remember my Dad always calling him, was a shipmate and friend with my Father, Harry C. Sparks. They served together for several years and Scamihorn was the reason we came to Bloomington in 1957. I am sorry for your loss. May God's mercies be with you all in the coming days. We have all lost a true "Navy man" with Scamihorn's passing.
