Donald Roe Summitt, age 72 of Bloomington passed away late Saturday night June 4, 2011 at IU Health Bloomington Hospital. He was born in Bloomington on May 25, 1939 to Theodore and Marie Taylor Summitt. Don was a 1959 graduate of Stinesville High School, an Army Veteran and spent 39 plus years with Indiana University working in the Physical Plant as a Sheet Metal Supervisor retiring in 1998. He was a member of the Arlington United Methodist Church, a former member of the Elks and enjoyed carving, building birdhouses and woodworking. HIs greatest loves though were his family, his granddaughter, his church and the simple things in life. Don leaves behind his wife of 50 years Jane East Summit of Bloomington; son Mark Robert Summitt of Bloomington; daughter Amy L. Gillen and her husband Joshua of Salem, Indiana; granddaughter Emma J. Payne of Salem; brother Robert Summitt and his wife Beverly of Gosport; brother Gary Summitt and his wife Ina of Ellettesville; sister Sue Cooter and her husband Don of Gosport; sister Linda Hatter and her husband Noel of Brooklyn, Indiana; sister Wilta Lighter and her husband Buddy of Brooklyn; brother in laws John R. East and Thomas William East, both of Bloomington. Don was preceded in death by his parents, a bother Winfred Summitt and a sister, Rovenia Summitt. Funeral Services will be held Thursday June 9, 2011 at 11:00AM at the Arlington United Methodist Church. Reverend Jim Roach will preside. Entombment will be in the Valhalla Memorial Gardens. Visitation for Don will be held Wednesday June 5, 2011 at the Allen Funeral Home 4155 South Old State Road 37 from 4:00PM until 8:00PM. Friends may also visit at the church on Thursday an hour prior to the service from 10:00AM until 11:00AM. Memorial contributions may be made to either Stonebelt or Arlington United Methodist church and online condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenfuneralhome.org.
