| Elizabeth (Lib) Buck |
| Date Of Birth: | April 4, 1923 |
| Date Of Death: | June 18, 2011 |
On Saturday, June 18, 2011 Elizabeth (Lib) Buck peacefully
passed away with her family and friends in attendance.
Lib was born in Iowa City on April 4, 1923 to Eleanor and
Walter Koop. Later the family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota
where she spent the majority of her youth. In 1946, while
attending the University of Minnesota, she met, and later married,
Roger C. Buck who preceded her in death. They were married on
September 4, 1948. After finishing their degrees they moved
to Oxford, England to pursue a Fulbright Scholarship that had been
awarded to Roger. After finishing at Oxford they spent the
next several years in the Gold Coast of Africa, which is now Ghana,
where Roger taught philosophy.
On their return to the US in 1952 she lived in several
University and College towns before settling in Bloomington in 1959
when Roger was given a tenured position in the newly formed
Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana
University.
Soon after arriving in Bloomington Lib became an attender,
and then joined, the Bloomington Society of Friends,
(Quakers).
During the 52 years that Lib made Bloomington her home she
was passionate about helping the less fortunate. She spent
many years working to improve the conditions in the jail. Lib
helped found and establish several rehabilitation programs such as
VORP, CJAM, and New Leaf/New Life. She won the communities'
Volunteer of the Year award in 2000.
Where ever Lib went she wore a smile and had a kind and
encouraging word for anyone she had the pleasure to meet. The
only regret she had concerning her passing was that there was still
so much work to be done.
Lib is survived by two siblings, Robert Koop of Fort Worth,
Texas, and Sister Anna Koop of Denver, Colorado. She leaves
four children, Elizabeth Lee Jones of Bloomington, Indiana, Roger
K. Buck of Saranac Lake, New York, William W. Buck of Bloomington,
Indiana, and Susan B. Kearney of Webster Groves, Mo. She also
had five Grandchildren, Stephen Jones, Austin and Amara Kearney and
Katrina and Phillip Buck.
Lib will be sorely missed by her family and countless
friends.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to New Leaf/New
Life, The Bloomington Society of Friends, or Heifer
International.
Allen Funeral Home 4155 South Old Highway 37 is handling the
arangements and online condolences may be sent to the family at www.allenfuneralhome.org.
