Eugene Jacobs, son of Albert and Nettie (Shields) Jacobs, was born in Monroe county. He was raised on a farm in the ramp creek area, Smithville Indiana where Lake Monroe is today. Know as Gene or Jake to many family and friends. He was one of nine children who survived to adulthood. As a young man Gene met and married Florence Waterford a pretty girl from nearby Harrodsburg Indiana- Excellent choice! Gene and Florence were married for more then 60 years and together raised four children. Gene worked at Fagan stone mill as well as other local mills before going to work at Westinghouse/abb in 1963. He worked hard all of his life. He enjoyed working with his hands and was very mechanically inclined. He impressed many with his extraordinary "fix it” abilities. Gene retired from Westinghouse\abb in 1988 after 25 years of service. He enjoyed many freiends he made through work, especially his longtime dear friend John Drake (deceased) Florence recalls an incident when gene had taken a car apart in the garage. He had parts strewn all over the garage! Florence doubted he would ever be able to get it all put together; he did and the end product was a car that ran! Gene enjoyed. gardening and was very proud of the produce that he grew, sharing his bounty selflessly. Gene and Florence were a team always even in the kitchen, they made blackberry jelly, persimmon pudding, and cobblers to name a few. In later years he took up baking. He was known for his handmade zucchini bread made from zucchini grown from his garden. Gene believed in God; he kept this relationship private. Gene loved old time country music. The kids remember dad coming home from work. Before coming in the house he would sit in the car with the grand ole opry, he would sit out there listening and singing along! One song they envisioned him singing was "walking the floor over you". Some of his favorite gospel songs were "amazing grace", "how great thou art" and I love to tell the story. Gene lovingly acquired many titles over the years: Husband, Dad, Daddy "Hey Eugene you Cat Daddy" grandpa, "boss of the dishwasher" then Dolan his 7`1' grandchild called him Daw, which stuck and thus affectionately called him "Daw" as well. Gene and Dolan had more then a grandfather/grandchild relationship, more like father son relationship, they were all abQut each other. Gene is survived by his wife: Florence (Waterford) Jacobs. Children: Katrina (Jerry) Long, Kathy (George) Ragan, CDR Steven E Jacobs (Teresa) and Lisa Jacobs. Seven grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren Jacob Ragan (Barbie) sons Gavin and Caden, Summer Sullivan (Sean), Steven Dale Long (fiancee Mindy Shute), Jana Long son Brayden, Ariel and Annaliese Jacobs and Dolan Jacobs. Brother Roger Jacobs (Jo Ann) and sister Maudeline Mitchell, Margret Corbin, and Mona Rose Hisey. Sister in law Margaret Jacobs, sister-in-law Betty Jacobs and brother-in-law Lawrence Edwards as well as several nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by 3 brothers; James Jacobs, Andrew Jacobs, William Jacobs, and one sister, Mellie Edwards.
