Floyd Jeffers, 92, of Bloomington died at Richland-Bean Blossom
Health Care on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. He was born on
February 13, 1920 in Springville, IN the son of Thomas and Elva
(McPike) Jeffers and grew up in Harrodsburg, IN. He was a
combat veteran of U.S. Army during World War II. He served in
Europe with the 51st Field Artillery Battalion.
His Battalion's 155-mm gun was the first U.S. Seventh Army field
artillery piece to fire from a position on German soil. Floyd
also saw action in France and Austria.
Floyd worked in several local limestone quarries as a planerman,
then moved on to a career in sheet metal work. He worked on
many of the Indiana University buildings as well as the Eli Lilly
buildings in Indianapolis. Floyd belonged to Local 20 of the
Sheet Metal Union.
On August 1, 1941, he married the love of his life, Mary E.
Skirvin. They were married for over 70 years. Together
they were members of the Indiana Ave. Church of Christ (now
Southern Hills Church of Christ). He served as Deacon for
many years.
He is survived by one son, Ronald F. Jeffers of Spencer, three
daughters, Linda K. Jeffers, Donna Jo (Roger)Zink, Debra Ann (Tom)
Woodward, all of Bloomington, IN. Also surviving are 11
grandchildren; Daniel (Heather Floyd) Willems, Christopher Willems
of Louisville, KY, Michelle Willems Moore of Berwick, LA., Aaron
(Amy) Jeffers , Rolla, MO, Michael Jeffers and Jared (Brandy)
Jeffers of Spencer, IN, Elizabeth Ann (Brian) Underwood,
Plainfield, IN, Jennifer (Jimmy) White, Indianapolis, IN, Ashley
Woodward, Tracy (Marcus) Christie and Jeffrey (Kathy) Sadler of
Bloomington IN. He also has 15 great grandchildren; Michael
Moore and Danielle Payne, Berwick, LA, Joseph, Jeremiah and Elyse
Jeffers, Rolla, MO, Veronica and Noah Jeffers, Spencer, IN, Avery
and Cooper Underwood, Plainfield, IN, Katelyn White, Indianapolis,
IN and Alle Sadler, Ceilidh and Keira Christie, Carrigan Brooks and
Adriana Brooks of Bloomington, IN and 2 great, great
grandchildren; Trenton Lee Moore and Hailey Renee' Payne of
Berwick, LA; 3 nieces, Sue (Goodman) Skinner, New Whiteland, IN,
Barbara (Chet) Hearth, Bedford,IN, Darlene (Connor) Radabaug,
Attica, IN; 4 nephews, Tom Jeffers and Tim Jeffers of Bloomington,
IN and Steve Jeffers and Gary Jeffers of Marion, IN.
Floyd was preceded in death by his wife, Mary (Skirvin) Jeffers,
parents, Thomas and Elva (McPike) Jeffers, grandparents Jacob and
Patience Anna (Wooten) McPike, Thomas Henry Jeffers, Polly Ann
(Grubb) Patton, 5 brothers; James, Homer, Hansel, Hanford and
Albert Jeffers, 2 sisters; Beatrice Goodman and Blanche Connor, 2
nieces, Elva May (Connor) McFarland and Mildren Jean (Connor)
Womack.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the
Southern Hills Church of Christ, 1030 W. Country Club LN,
Bloomington with Bro. Pat Arthur officiating. Burial will be
at Valhalla Memory Gardens where the Monroe County Veterans Honor
Guard will conduct Military Graveside rites. Friends may call
at the church on Friday from 4:00-7:00 p.m. and one hour preceding
the services on Saturday.
