Gary Russell Fridley, 67, of Bloomington, IN passed away at home on June 1, 2010 surrounded by his family.
Gary was born in Des Moines, Iowa to Dale Russell Fridley and Mary Jane (Rogerson) Fridley. He was preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his wife, Julianne (Smith) Fridley, daughters Noel Hanson (Tim) of Bloomington, Janie Renteria (Art) of Norfolk, VA, son, Robert Fridley, and two grandchildren, Gunnar and Kyra Hanson, of Bloomington.
Gary attended Iowa Wesleyan College and later earned a degree in General Studies from the University of Iowa. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1966 and served four years as a Hospital Corpsman in San Diego and Guam. Following his honorable discharge he decided to build on his Hospital Corpsman experience and earned a Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from Mary Crest College in Davenport, Iowa in 1974. Gary reentered the Navy in the fall of 1974 as an Ensign in the Navy Nurse Corps. He served at Naval Hospital Millington, TN, Naval Hospital Great Lakes,IL, became an instructor at Hospital Corps School Great Lakes, then transferred to Rota, Spain. He subsequently returned to Naval Hospital Great Lakes and retired from Naval Hospital Millington, TN in May 1989 with the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
His favorite past times were spending time with his family, hunting, fishing, woodworking, and teaching his son, Robert, how to play golf. He was a member of the Military Officers Association of America and the Buck Creek Muzzle Loaders Association.
Visitation and a Celebration of Life will be held at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 South Walnut St. Bloomington, IN on Saturday, June 12, 2010. Visitation will begin at 11am, followed by the Celebration of Live with full military honors at 1pm. Gary will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Bloomington Hospital Hospice or the Coach Hep Indiana Cancer Challenge (CHICC).
