Date Of Birth:March 2, 1925
Date Of Death:August 28, 2011
Service Date:September 1, 2011

Geneveive (Gene) Jane Grindstaff passed away Sunday, August 28, 2011, her late husband George's birthday. She was born on March 2, 1925 to Ora Elmer Bailey and Lucille Catherine Petering, the third of four children. She grew up a few miles west of Columbus, Indiana and graduated from Columbus High School in 1942. Her education was side-tracked a few years while she battled tuberculosis and fully recovered after spending months in a sanitorium in southern Indiana. She eventually followed in her older sister's footsteps and received her education as a registered nurse from St. Vincent's School of Nursing. Soon after she was re-connected with a former classmate and married George Robert (Bob) Grindstaff on November 2, 1951. They lived in Columbus where Gene was a nurse-turnedhousewife after their two daughters were born 20 months apart. Later, they moved to Shelbyville, Indiana where her husband was transferred with Indiana Bell Telephone. There they added a son and made their final move to Bloomington, Indiana in 1965. Gene was an active member of Delta Theta Tau sorority for over 30 years. In later years Gene and George (Bob) enjoyed traveling and visiting casinos to play the "one-armed-bandits". They had friends from the Elks, Moose and Eagles lodges as well as the Shrine Club. Gene is survived by her children and their spouses; Bobbie (Brad) Blume of Bloomington; Cathy Grindstaff (Tom Ford) of Danville; Mike (Kathy) Grindstaff of Carmel and grandchildren Jennifer (William) Stovall; Devin (Meagan) Bybee; Brooklyn Bybee; Jacob Grindstaff, Hannah Grindstaff, Brieanna Blume and Dylan Blume. She is also survived by her first great-grandchild; Gaar Stovall. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and brothers; Harold and George Bailey, sister, Josephine (Bailey) Koepke; and son-in-law Daniel Bybee. Funeral services will be held Thursday September 1, 2011 at Allen Funeral Home 4155 South Old Highway 37 at 11:00AM. Visitation will be on Wednesday August 30, 2011 from 5:00PM until 8:00PM and from 10:00AM until the time of the service on Thursday, also at Allen Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to The Gathering Together c/o Rita Fiorentino, 147 North Center Street, Plainfield, IN 46168, where Geneveive was so lovingly cared for in her last days. Cathy, Bobbie, and Mike: My mom just told me the news about your mom today. I'm thinking about all of you and feeling very sad. Cathy, I still remember how you tried so hard to call your mom when we went to Europe because she would be so terribly worried if she didn't hear from you (the days before email!). We had a hard time figuring out the phone system in England and it was several days before we ended up calling your parents in the middle of the night because we had finally just figured out a way to call--probably scared the daylights out of them! You will be in my thoughts on Thursday. Love, Cathy
