George Earl Huntington Jr. died peacefully at his home on Thursday, surrounded by family and caregivers.
George was born in Bloomington, the son of George Sr. and Gertrude (Baily) Huntington. His brother John T. Huntington preceded him in death.
George grew up in Bloomington, and it strengthened a deep love for the surrounding area and the community. During this time he developed his life-long love of hiking and camping. As a teenager, George pursued his love for adventure and turned a passion for flying into an interesting first job. George graduated from the former University High School and attended Indiana University for two years before enrolling in the FBI Academy as preparation for his over forty year career in law enforcement. From the late forties through the late sixties, he gave twenty of years of service to the Bloomington Police Department, eight as Chief of Police. Following his retirement from the city, he earned a B.A. in criminal justice from Indiana University and worked at the Kinsey Institute while completing his studies. In the early seventies, he began an over twenty year career as Chief of the Indiana University Police Department, Bloomington campus. He also served the community as a deputy coroner for decades. Following his retirement from Indiana University in the early nineties he was elected to two consecutive terms as Monroe County Coroner.
He loved to hike in the woods, read a good book, and tell fascinating stories.

Location:Ft. Myers, FloridaI was with the IU Police Dept. from 1970-1994. I had several encounters with George during his tenure as chief. All my contacts were very positive because George always came up with stories past & present to be not only interesting but exciting. I admired & respected George for not only being the chief, but more so for being a friend & somebody you could confide in. I will always remember him & I know he will be greatly missed.

Location:Dana Point, CaliforniaHello Tad and Chris,
I lived next to you guys on Edwards Row from kindergarten to 5th grade. That would have been something like 1961 to 1967. I remember your Dad very well, that big ol' black GMC panel truck he drove, or was it a chevy surburban? I remember being somewhat afraid of the guy, after all, he was Chief of the Police!! Not that I had any reason to be afraid of him of course... at least not till I got into high school and college! One good thought was, if I ever did get into trouble, I knew somebody on the "inside"! :) This is kind of a funny story I guess, but your Dad did have an impact on me in a way. Do you remember that we used to play Army all the time? I remember he made you two a machine gun out of wood and used a metal film cannister for the ammunition rounds, similar to a Thompson submachine gun. I guess I thought it was a cool thing to do for your kids, because I made wood machine guns for both my boys as they grew up. They loved those guns, and all the kids in neighbor thought they were cool. Say "Hello" to your Mom for me. She came to my mother's furneral in 1984, I will never forget that act of kindness. Celebrate his life, he helped bring two great kids into this world that I had fun growing up with.
I send all my best to you and your families, Kevin McWhirter

For a brief time in the 1930's, my family lived on the same block as the Huntingtons. I would have been 7 or 8 years old, and still remember George, just a few years older than I, who patiently helped me learn to ride my first two-wheeler bike. It's a long time ago, but still fresh in my memory is his kindness to a shy and unsure little girl. I am sad to know he is not in our world any longer, and am thinking of all of you who will miss him.

My deepest condolences for both of you. I know the past couple of years have been trying and demanding. I also know both of you exhibited an incredible level of devotion wrapped inside a very thick blanket of unconditional love exhibited in your actions in assuring the comfort and well-being of your father as he moved into the final part of his life. It is obvious he was loved - I'm sure he knew he was loved - and your actions are just outward examples of why both of you are also loved by so many.

Location:Navarre FloridaWe just heard last night about George's passing. It's comforting to know that he is at peace and hiking and camping in such a special place. I have so many good memories of George when we both worked the streets of Monroe County. And the stories!!!!! I could listen to him talk forever and he always made me laugh. His sense of humor was all his. He was a good, honest, straight shooting man, and will be missed............but the memories will stay with me forever.
