John G. Gillespie, of Bloomington passed away May 9, 2010 at Bloomington Hospital. He was 88 years old.
Born February 10, 1922 in Bloomington, he was the son of Orine and Elizabeth Jane (Ducker) Gillespie. He was a 1941 graduate of Ellettsville High School. John was a proud veteran of the US Navy serving aboard the USS Colorado during World War II. He married Marjorie M. Schneider on August 2, 1947. He retired from the Midland Cut Stone Company in 1984 where he had worked as a planerman. He was active in the Boy Scouts serving as a Scout leader for over 36 years and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of the Journeyman Stonecutters Association of Indiana and a member of the West Second Street Church of Christ.
John is survived by his children, Judy Zabel (James) of Brownstown, IN, John F. Gillespie of Bloomington, IN, Janice Conder (Larry) of Bloomington, IN and Margo Miller (Donald) of Mt. Vernon, IN; a sister Barbara Cala (Nobel) of Indianapolis, IN; fifteen grandchildren, Jill Zabel, John David Zabel (Lindsey), Jeffrey Zabel (Jennifer), Jamie Leugers (Eric), Laura Gillespie, Leslie Gillespie, Kelly Terrell (William), Michelle Vincent (Travis), Jason Conder, Jessica Chandler (Troy), Travis Conder and fiancé Chelsie Fox, Danielle Miller, Rebecca Miller, Donnie Miller and Emily Miller; seven great grandchildren, Cody and Wyatt Vincent, Lydia and Camry Conder, Kiley Zabel and Camryn and Mia Zabel, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Marjorie M. Gillespie on January 9, 2009, his parents, and six brothers and sisters, Catherine Mood, Charles Gillespie, Mary Browning, Herman Gillespie, Clifton Gillespie and Virginia Medley.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 12 at 11:00 a.m. at Allen Funeral Home, 4155 S. Old State Rd. 37, with Brothers Russell Minett and Mike Davis officiating.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2:00-8:00 pm at the funeral home.
