Leland George Howard formally of Rockville, Indiana died March 31st at 1:15 a.m. He was born November 16, 1926 in Indianapolis, the son of George and Virginia Howard.
Survivors include his wife Marilyn Howard, his children Mary E. Howard of Terre Haute, David L. Howard of Bloomingdale and Michael G. Howard of Melborne Beach , Florida whose mother Patsy Ruth Howard passed away in 1999. His sister Phyllis Lauten Schlaeger lives in Otis, Oregon. He is also survived by one grandson, Shawn Howard of Rockville, Indiana.
Mr. Howard graduated from Shortridge High School, Indianapolis, attended the Indianapolis College of Pharmacy, Butler University and received his B.S. in Chemistry from Indiana University in 1950.
He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy from 1944-1946. Prior to joining the Navy he was employed by the National Youth Administration and the City of Indianapolis. In 1950 he joined the Shell Oil Company, then spent almost thirty three years with Eli Lilly and Company retiring in 1984.
Mr. Howard served on the Board of Directors of Hamilton Center, Inc., the Sheldon Swope Art Museum and the Indiana University Art Museum. His hobby was researching and writing in the art history field where he was published on several occasions.
The Allen Funeral Home, Bloomington, IN is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be made to the Art Department, Indiana Wesleyan University, Marion, Indiana or to the donor’s charity of choice. Private family services will be conducted at Oak Hill Cemetery in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
