Margaret, daughter of Albert and Nettie (Shields) Jacobs, was born in Monroe County. She was raised on a farm in the Ramp Creek Area near Smithville, Indiana. Margaret was one of nine children who survived to adulthood. She graduated from Smithville High School in 1940 and like many others of her generation she worked at RCA. She left RCA to attend cosmetology school and a few years later established the very successful Fashion Beauty Salon in Bloomington. She sold her salon in the late 70s and relocated to St. Louis where she worked at Saks Fifth Avenue in the cosmetics department for many years. She returned to Bloomington in 2003.
A true resourceful child of the depression, Margaret was hard-working with a penchant for thriftiness. She was also known as Mag, Maggie Belle, G.G. and Grams to adoring family members. She was a talented seamstress, loved crossword puzzles and playing cards, liked to make pies and travel. She was especially loved by her grandchildren and enjoyed joining them and other neighboring children in their activities.
Margaret was a member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha philanthropic sorority and volunteered at Bloomington Hospital and St. Luke’s Hospital in Chesterfield, MO.
Margaret is survived by four children: Kenneth Dean (Patty) Corbin of Moline, IL, Bill (Sandee) Corbin of Oro Valley, AZ, Faye (Gary) Knackstedt and Carol Whaley of Bloomington, six grandchildren: Patrick (Caryn) Corbin of LeMars, Iowa, Julie (Tim) Johnson of Hampton, Illinois, Mikel (Mark) Smith of Birmingham, Alabama, Nikki (Mike) Kelly of Chesterfield, Missouri, Whitney Whaley of Greensburg, PA and Lindsey Whaley of Bedford, IN. eight great grandchildren: Emily and Jacob Corbin, Molly and Brandon Johnson, Nathan Gaudet, Jake Silvestri and Morgann and Mason Smith and one great- great granddaughter, Kaleila Gaudet. Brother Roger (JoAnn) Jacobs and sisters Maudeline Mitchell and Mona Rose Hisey survive her. She is also survived by one brother-in-law, Lawrence Edwards, three sisters-in-law, Margaret Jacobs, Betty Jacobs and Florence Jacobs and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Michael J. Corbin, four brothers, James, Andrew, William & Eugene Jacobs and one sister Mellie (Babe) Edwards.
Visitation will be at Allen Funeral Home today November 5, 2010, from 4 to 8pm and one hour preceding the services at the funeral home on Saturday. Services will be held at Allen Funeral Home on Saturday November 6, 2010, at 11:00 a.m. with Glen Stidd officiating, burial following at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
