Martene (Timberlake) Smith, 88, ofBloomington, passed away
Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at Sterling House. She was born on January
29, 1923 on a farm inCrawfordCounty, IN. She was the daughter of
Roy E. and Estella E. (Rainey) Timberlake. On October
10, 1941 she married William L. Smith. She gave birth to two sons
Ronald Dwayne and Jay Steven. Martene was an active
member of St. Mark'sUnitedMethodistChurchwhere she enjoyed the
Bible Explorers Class and the United Methodist Women's Group. She
participated in discussion, teaching and inspirational
writing. She also wrote an autobiography of short
stories of her early life for her family and friends. Martene was
an alumni ofIndianaUniversityand enjoyed IU Basketball. She later
earned her PhD. in Adult Education/Aging. She was a member of the
Pi Lamda Theta. Martene is survived by her two sons and
their wives Ron and Myrna of St. Joseph, IL and Steve and Donna of
Bloomington, IN. She has five grandchildren Gregg Smith (Teresa),
Julie Luna (Michael), Gretchen deWeber (Adam), Zach Smith (Ann) and
Francesca Smith; five great-grandchildren Alexis Thompson, Isabella
and Payton Luna, Ella and Amelia deWeber; and one brother William
G. Timberlake of Clarksville,IN. Funeral Services will
be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 30, 2011 at St. Mark's United
Methodist Church with Rev. Ned Steele officiating. Burial will be
held at the Old Union Cemetery near Sulphur. Family will receive
friends from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Allen Funeral Home. In
lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to IU Health
Bloomington Hospital Hospice or Gideons.
