Michael Andrew Campbell McMullen
Date Of Birth:August 7, 1985
Date Of Death:May 11, 2010
Service Date:May 15, 2010

Michael McMullen, known to all who loved him as Mikey, was born on August 7, 1985 in Tallahassee, Florida and from the beginning he was a spark of energy in the lives of his family and friends.  He died on Tuesday, May 11. He was a gifted athlete who loved playing soccer, playing on teams from early childhood through high school at Bloomington High School North. He served as co-president of the BHSN chapter of Habitat for Humanity. After completing high school, he attended Evergreen State College in Washington, and then transferred to the New England School of Photography in Boston. He became a skilled and passionate photographer with an interest in the unique architecture of the city and in nature.  In addition to photography, Mikey was also a gifted musician who taught himself guitar as a young adult and pursued it on his own and with friends.

There is no doubt that Mikey brought a unique energy to the world. His spontaneity and witty personality brought laughter to those around him, often bringing humor to a situation in unexpected ways.  In addition to his outgoing nature, he was also an avid reader and had a passion for history, philosophy, and politics. These interests were reflected in his strong convictions and deep set of values, which he lived out in his own quiet way. He loved spending time outdoors, camping and fishing with friends, and with them founded B.A.S.S., the Bloomington Angling and Spelunking Society.

Above all, Mikey cared deeply for his loved ones and was extraordinarily devoted to his family and close friends, many of whom have been with him since preschool.  His compassion and loyalty, his sensitive heart, his laughter, and the creativity that Mikey brought to his music and art will be deeply missed by those of us who loved him.

Mikey is survived by his parents, Mary and Rick McMullen; and brothers Brad and Ben McMullen of Bloomington; his grandmother, Alice Benson of Sun City Center, Florida; his aunts and uncles, Sue and John Hicks of Bloomington; Ruth and Phil Bursi of Atlanta, Georgia; Neil McMullen of Clearwater, Florida; and his cousins, Katie Hicks, John Michael and Zack Hudson, John, Chuck, Alex, and Tommy Bursi, and Camp McMullen. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Marcel Benson, and his paternal grandparents, Neil and Ruth McMullen.

Visitation for Mikey will be held Friday May 14, 2010 at the Allen Funeral Home 4155 South Old Highway 37 from 5:00PM until 8:00PM.

The Burial Office will be held Saturday, May 15, at 10 o’clock AM, at Trinity Episcopal Church, with the Rev. Dr. Linda C. Johnson officiating. Interment will follow at Clear Creek Cemetery. A reception for family and friends at the McMullen home immediately follows interment. In lieu of flowers, please send contributions to Bradford Woods Outdoor Education Programs 5040 State Road 67 North, Martinsville, IN 46151 or the Bloomington High School North chapter of Habitat for Humanity 3901 North Kinser Pike Bloomington, Indiana 47404.

At some point I hope the good memories will overcome the hard ones. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers as you deal with all that you need to. Sincerely, Kim and Eric

Oh Mary and Rick, Brad and Ben. I just saw this. My heart is breaking for you. I loved Mikey, loved seeing him and Brad and Ben grow up. I loved the joy your whole family brought to my family, loved the afternoons in the backyard with our kids, loved that I was fortunate enough to have such wonderful neighbors. I shall always remember Mikey's good nature and calming influence. He was a pleasure to talk with and I truly enjoyed getting to know him during LIS class. Our world needs more people like Mikey; kind, compassionate, and he had a great deal of empathy for others. My thoughts are with his family during this sorrowful time.

Rick and Mary, I'm so sorry about death of your son Mikey. One of my sisters lost a son years ago (Ben was 10 at the time and as full of life as you can imagine). And so I've been close to this kind of loss. I know the pain is all encompassing. Nothing is worse than the death of your child. All of us parents know that. So, I feel for you literally and have a sense of what you are going through, and will go through in the days ahead. All I can say is hang in there as best you can. Steve
