Michael Raymond Murphy
Date Of Birth:April 4, 1964
Date Of Death:Decebmer 2, 2011
Service Date:December 8, 2011

Michael Raymond Murphy was born in Yonkers, New York, on April 4, 1964. He was the son of Raymond and Marie Murphy who mourn his loss. He was preceded in death by his grandparents Christopher and Bridget Murphy of Yonkers, New York. Michael was educated at The Pinesbridge School for Special Needs Students in Yorktown Heights, New York, and completed his education at Bloomington North High School. Upon completion of high school Michael moved into his Options for Better Living Group Home on Ida Lane, where he lived with his special fraternity of brothers and wonderful caretakers until his passing on Friday evening, December 2, 2011.

Throughout his life Michael was an avid collector of Disney and Superhero DVDs.  His hero was Superman, and he often emulated his actions standing up for the underdog.  He proudly wore his Superman t-shirt around town with his collection of badges from his favorite restaurants.  He always dressed as Superman for the Options Halloween Dance.  Michael also was an accomplished medal winner in Special Olympic bowling, swimming, and golf.  He was employed at Stone Belt where he was a top producer in the Cook Room as well as the Art Room.

Mike enjoyed his Friday night dinners at Red Lobster (the source of many of his badges thanks to their friendly staff), and his Saturday's attending church at St. Paul's Catholic Center followed by an outing to Steak and Shake with his Options'  caretakers.  Sunday was by far his favorite day.  He relaxed at home hitting golf balls with his dad, composing loud music on his keyboard for his mom, and devouring his dad's special spaghetti suppers.

He will be missed at holiday gatherings at his sister Ellen, and brother-in-law, Doug Porter's home. There he shared his stories and champion eating skills with his nieces Amy Porter Cohn, Bridget Porter McGuire, and Megan Porter Flodder, as well as his great nieces and nephews.  He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Cathi and Mark Gage, and their sons, Alan, Brian, and Nathan of Granger, Indiana, and his sister and brother-in-law Christine and Eric Wright of Poway, California.

Mike was blessed with wonderful parents, sisters, and caretakers who advocated for him throughout his life.  His life was enriched in many ways by Stonebelt and Options for Better Living. If you would like to honor him please make a donation to one of these organizations.

Calling hours will be held at Allen Funeral Home 4155 S. Old St. Road 37 Bloomington, IN, on Wednesday, December 7, 2011, from 4-8 p.m.

Burial will be on Thursday, December 8, 2011, at Valhalla Memory Gardens following a 10:00 a.m. Mass at St. Paul's Catholic Center.

Michael touched my heart with his enthusiasm, honesty and easy going nature. I will miss him and remember him always. My brother can not talk but I know that he loved Michael with a special ease and comfort in his presence at home, as his after work basketball buddy, and in the community. His sudden departure is painful and leaves a huge void. In time, the tears and sadness will eventually pass and a smile at remembering his beautiful heart and our honor of knowing him will remain. Ray and Marie, my heart is with you.

To the family of Michael Murphy. I was so saddened to hear of Michael's passing. My family and I frequently attended the same Saturday afternoon Mass as he did. He was always such an enthusiastic participant, and made me smile with his faultless recitation of the Apostle's Creed. I am sad that Father's Bob and Rich are not here to attend his Mass. It will not be the same without them all there. Please know that he touched the hearts of many people with his smile and his warm handshake. Bless you.
