Richard was one of the most kind and caring people I know. I thought about him often. Sherry was my cousin and Richard and Sherry opened their home to my family while my daugher was a student at IU. I will truly miss him.

Richard is the classic example of what a person can be. No, he wasn't perfect. And that to me is comforting. He showed us that a person can be patient, wise, strong, and caring. He lived his life with dignity and grace. Good Journey, Dik... Ken

Hi. I was shocked today to learn that Richard "Dick" Sammis had recently died. While I never got to know him well, I had a lot of respect for him for the knowledge I knew he carried about networking, and the excellent team of engineers he managed at IU. He will be missed.

I had the priviledge to work with Dik for the past 28 years at IU. While I did not know Dik well, he was always kind and thoughtful to me and others. He was many times a calm and reasonable voice which made people listen when he had something to say. My thoughts and prayers are with Dik and his family.

Richard was an amazing guy. He somehow found a way to walk through the fire and still continue living life. His strength was an inspiration to me. I only hope I too can remain as positive, happy and at peace when I am confronted with life's challenges. I will always remember his quiet smile and grace and along with Ken, wish him a good journey. He will be missed but not forgotten.

Dick, or Dik as his preferred spelling in recent years, and I have been friends for over 50 years. We were best friends from the time his family moved from North Carolina to Covington in 1958, through high school, college, and until his passing. Dik and I shared a passion for amateur radio, aka ham radio, as both of us were licensed hams. He and his father Willard, also a ham, had a very important impact on my life. My memories of Dik's family and all of the shared fun we had double dating with our respective high school girlfriends will remain with me forever. I offer my sincere condolences to his family, and his son Dylan, and his ex-wife Susan Sammis. Take care my friend, Don W9CW
