Richard Allen Lamphere

Richard Allen Lamphere, 90, passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, April 22 in Bloomington, Indiana. He was born October 20, 1920 in Weedsport, New York where he lived for most of his life before moving to Bloomington in July of last year 2009.

Following graduation from Weedsport High School, Richard attended The Annapolis Preparatory School in Annapolis, Maryland before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1940.    A World War II veteran, Richard served from 1940 -1945 as a Radioman First Class aboard both the U.S.S. Arkansas and the U.S.S. Cowpens. At the end of WWII, he continued with the Naval Reserve until 1957.

Richard worked for New York Telephone for more than 38 years and retired in 1984. In retirement, he became an avid golfer and from that passion started PML Golf Cars, which he co-owned with his wife Patricia. Together, they also owned “Keep Swingin’” Driving Range in Weedsport. 

He was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Weedsport where he served as an ordained elder and on a number of church committees. He was a member of the Heck-Clark American Legion Post #0568 in Weedsport.

Richard is survived by his wife Patricia, daughters Karen (Robert) Schultz of Berlin, MD; Margaret (Chris) McEvoy of Auburn, NY; Lori Lamphere and Kelley (Scott) Brown of Bloomington, IN, and sons Alfred (Irene) Lamphere of Port Byron, NY and Jean-Paul (Tina) Lamphere of Greenville, SC.  He also leaves behind nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, along with his sisters Helen Longendyke and Eula Lamphere of Auburn, NY.  He is predeceased by his son Richard Jr.  

A gathering of friends and family to celebrate Richard’s life will be planned for early summer in Weedsport, NY.

In lieu of flowers or those wishing to make a contribution in Richard’s name may do so to Indiana University Health Hospice.
