Rita Smith, 80, of Bloomington passed away Wednesday at home with her loving family by her side. She was born July 4, 1931 in Springville, Indiana, the daughter of Erza and Esther (Zikes) Johnston. She married Vernon Smith on February 25, 1956.  Rita attended Bloomington  High School. She retired from RCA in 1992. She was a beloved wife and mother who loved her family dearly and always had a smile on her face. Rita was an avid IU, Colts and Pacers Fan. She loved fishing, mushroom hunting, going on car rides to the overlook and spending time with her family. She enjoyed feeding and watching the birds and squirrels from her patio. She was well known for her persimmon pudding. When she was able she would donate blood to the American Red Cross and supported United Way and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Rita is survived by her husband of 55 years Vernon Smith; two sons Steve Smith of Bloomington and Larry Smith of Indianapolis; two sisters Marie Pritchard and Shirley Bryant both of Bloomington and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, infant son Randy J. Smith; three sisters Helen Eads, Roxie Hessinger and Mary Fiscus; five brothers Clovis, Fred, George, Ralph and Dewey Johnston and one nephew Sam Johnston. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, November 14, 2011 at Allen Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens. Family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of Rita.
