Robert Grimm Conklin, 80, of Bloomington passed away Friday July 9, 2010 at the Bloomington Hospital. He was born in Yonkers, New York on January 17, 1930 to William Wood Conklin and Mary C. Grimm Conklin, the third of three sons. He was baptized and made confirmation at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Yonkers. Robert spent his entire professional career at Otis Elevator Co. being transferred to Bloomington in 1968 from Yonkers and eventually retiring after 42 years of service. He served in the United States Army in the “Old Guard”, 3rd US Infantry stationed in Ft. Myer, Virginia and was a proud to have been selected to be a member of the Honor Guard at the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Robert was a Past Commander of the American Legion Post #18 in Bloomington and an active member for many years serving in various positions at the Post. He thoroughly enjoyed all types of sport, bowling, and cooking. Robert is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marianne Coyne Conklin of Bloomington; son Robert G. Conklin Jr. of Stony Point, New York; four daughters, Christine M. Conklin of Ellettsville, Susanne M. Conklin of Tappan, New York, Phyllis C. Gormley and her husband Charles of Wharton, New Jersey, and Jill Martin and her husband Charlie of Ellettsville. He is also survived by nine grandchildren; Tami Messner of West Haverstraw, New York, Dawn Messner of Haverstraw, New York, Joseph Daly of Ellettsville, Colleen, Devin and Taryn Gormely of Wharton, New Jersey, Tyler Conklin of Stony Point, New York and Haley and Ryan Martin of Ellettsville. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Warren Conklin and a brother and sister-in-law William Wood Jr. and Hazel Conklin. Funeral services for Robert will be held Tuesday July 13, 2010 at 1:00PM in the afternoon at Allen Funeral Home 4155 South Old Highway 37. Friends may visit at Allen Funeral Home on Monday from 4:00PM until 8:00PM.
