Wayne Philip Selk, 83, of Bloomington died Thursday, June 10, 2010 at Bloomington Hospital following a lengthy illness. The youngest of four sons, he was born on January 30, 1927 in Dysart, Iowa, to Fritz and Kathryn (Bloss) Selk. He graduated from Dysart High School with the class of 1946. During his school years, he lettered in basketball and baseball and was to continue playing on town teams after his military service. He joined his three older brothers in military service and, with his mother’s permission, served for three years in the United States Marine Corps.  During his service he participated in the occupation of China. He married Lois E. Snyder of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York on June 29, 1952. In 1956, he began employment with the Otis Elevator Company in Yonkers, New York. When Otis opened the plant in Bloomington in 1965, the family relocated and, after thirty years with the company, Wayne retired. A lifetime member of the Lutheran Church, he was an active member of St. Thomas Lutheran Church. He was proud of his service in the USMC and was a member of the American Legion. Cooking was a special interest his whole adult life, much to the enjoyment of family and friends. He is survived by his wife of fifty-eight years; a son Philip and his wife Lesli of Colorado Springs, CO; and two daughters, Martha and Deborah, both of Bloomington. He was very proud to be the grandfather of Carol and her husband, Jake, Claire, Daniel, Rachael and Kelly, and great-grandfather of Collin and Alexander, all of Colorado Springs. He was preceded in death by his parents and three older brothers. The family would like to thank the many caregivers at Meadowood Health Pavilion and Garden Villa and especially the professional staff at Bloomington Hospital. A memorial service will be held Sunday, June 27, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 3800 E. Third St., Bloomington, IN 47401 or a charity of your choice.

I am a CNA at Meadowood. I just wanted to let you how sorry I am to hear of his passing. Wayne was a great guy, always joking, very pleasant. It was the highlight of my day to go in and just talk with Wayne for a few minutes. It was really fun listening to him share some of his life, and his sense of humor was really something. Again, I am sorry for your loss.

Its been a little over 2 Months since Wayne passed away.. I know you miss him a lot. Just wanted to tell his family that I worked with Wayne at Otis/Bloomington. I started working there in 65'.. we both worked in shipping. I was secretary. Wayne always had a smile and never had a bad day I don't think. Several have passed away after all these years and I'm glad I remember the good ones. Wayne was a good guy.. Jerri Patterson
